Stop the Revolution

In Oliver Goldsmith's essay he bemoans that fact the rich are taking everything away from the poor and country life is disappearing. He disagrees with the British interest in foreign trade and finds it most unfair that the land is owned by a small number of millionaires. I agree there needs to be a balance in place so there is not such a huge gap between the rich and the poor. This has always seemed so unfair to me.

One could argue that Goldsmith was bitter because he was having money problems. According to wikipedia Goldsmith was "perennially in debt, had a massive output as a hack writer for the publishers of London, [and] his few painstaking works earned him the company of Samuel Johnson, along with whom he was a founding member of "The Club". Of Goldsmith Johnson stated:
Goldsmith had no settled notions upon any subject so he talked always at random. It seemed to be his intention to blurt out whatever was in his mind and see what would become of it.
It seems even his friends found him a bit hard to take.

Perhaps Goldsmith was not bitter and only had a vision for a more pastorel lifestyle and wanted to keep things simple. If this was the case then he would be appalled to see the state the world is in now.

Hi Lucy! Whatever happened to quiet pastoral settings anyway! You would think someone would be glad to take advantage of a little peace and quiet. I'm sure looking forward to some over the holidays! Have a great Christmas. Debra
